Karl HAMANN, Chief Executive Officer, Singapore

Karl Hamann was appointed in March 2014 as the Chief Executive Officer of QBE Singapore.

Prior to this appointment, Karl was the CEO of QBE Insurance (Malaysia) Berhad for close to four years. Previously he served as Regional Operations Manager, Asia, in the Singapore Regional Office and as President and CEO & Executive Director of QBE Insurance (Philippines) Inc.

With leadership and strategic experience in underwriting, claims, distribution, and operational roles, Karl has extensive knowledge of the insurance industry regionally and internationally.

Karl holds a Bachelor Degree in Commerce from Deakin University and is a Fellow member of the Australian Insurance Institute and the Australian Insurance Law Association. He is also the President of the General Insurance Association of Singapore (GIA).

Yew Kong KOK, Chief Financial Officer, Singapore

Yew Kong joined QBE Singapore in September 2016 as the Chief Financial Officer, Singapore. His team oversees all finance, accounting, planning and treasury matters for QBE Singapore.

Yew Kong works with the CEO and Management Board to deliver corporate goals, business strategies and growth plans as well as maintaining credit ratings and regulatory relationships.

He brings along more than 20 years of experience in financial management in the insurance industry.

Yew Kong joined us from Chubb Insurance Malaysia where he was the Chief Financial Officer, and was responsible for developing, directing and leading the financial functions of the company, providing timely and accurate reporting of corporate information, financial planning & performance monitoring and ensuring the company’s obligations with respect to its shareholders, auditors, regulators, regional office, home office parent, and other government agencies as discharged appropriately.

Prior to that, Yew Kong spent 8 years with QBE Insurance (Malaysia) Berhad where he was the Company Secretary/Assistant General Manager for Finance, and also 13 years with MSIG Insurance (Malaysia) Berhad as the Assistant Vice President for Finance.

Yew Kong holds a FCCA qualification, a Fellow Member with the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (UK) and is also a Chartered Accountant with the Malaysian Institute of Accountants.

James YONG, Head of Sales & Distribution, Singapore

James Yong is the Head of Sales & Distribution, Singapore, and has been with QBE since 1982.

He plays a key role in managing and improving relationship with our major trading partners, local brokers, agents and other alternative distribution channels. Key priorities are taken to embed CRM to build and reward business through new business penetration, customer retention and customer loyalty.

James has more than 39 years of insurance experience in the insurance industry. His career with QBE began in the development of agency and broking business. He was also the Underwriting Manager for general insurance for more than five years and moved on to take charge of both the underwriting and business development areas, and later became the Country Manager.

James actively participates in a number of industry bodies, including the General Insurance Association of Singapore, Singapore Insurance Institute, Singapore Insurance Broking Association, and the Association of the Singapore Insurance Agents.

Leonard ANG, Assistant General Manager – Head of Underwriting, Non-Marine, Singapore

Leonard was appointed the AGM, Head of Underwriting (non-marine) in 2016. He oversees the underwriting team in the production, analysis and interpretation of product portfolio reporting. In addition, he also oversees the technical services, policy administration, pricing and analytics functions which he has been leading since joining QBE Singapore in 2004.

Leonard has more than 25 years in the general insurance industry and is a Fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute. He possesses strong experience in business development and underwriting.

Prior to joining QBE, Leonard worked for Zurich Insurance Singapore as the Commercial Manager and was responsible for the portfolio management of the commercial segment for the Singapore and Malaysia markets. Previously, he also worked with Eagle Star Singapore as an Underwriting Manager, covering both marine and non-marine classes.

Shirley OW, Head of Business Transformation, Singapore

Shirley Ow was appointed the Head of Business Transformation in 2016. In this role, she will oversee business transformation projects, where she implements changes and business improvement strategies to support strategic transformational initiatives and business improvement programs.

She started her career in the insurance industry as a trainee broker in a local insurance brokerage firm and went on to specialize in marine insurance after completing her ACII in Marine.

She held various positions in South British Insurance (which was later merged with The New Zealand Insurance Co. Ltd), where she handled both marine and non-marine underwriting, business development, marine cargo claims and recoveries.

Shirley first joined QBE in 1986 as the Marine Manager and was seconded in 2004 to the QBE Marine Underwriting Agency to head the Marine Cargo Department. She was also the Regional Cargo Underwriter – Asia. From marine she moved to non-marine as Assistant GM – Product and Underwriting in 2012.

Rama CHANDRAN, Head of Marine, Singapore

Rama Chandran was appointed in August 2015 as Head of Marine for QBE Singapore. He is also the Asia Pacific lead for hull and liability. Rama comes with more than 30 years of extensive industry and marine underwriting experience. Prior to QBE, Rama worked as a Class Underwriter, Marine and Energy for Argo Global Underwriting Asia Pacific. Before that, he was the Head of Marine, SVP for Asia Capital Reinsurance Group Singapore managing a team of underwriters for both Facultative and Treaty business covering Asia, GCC, Central Asia, Turkey and Australia/New Zealand. Rama is a marine engineer by trade and has worked for Neptune Orient Lines Singapore prior to joining the insurance industry.

Rama holds a Masters of Business Administration from University of Leicester and is a member of Society of Naval Architect & Marine Engineering and Singapore Maritime Officers’ Union. He is a qualified Marine Engineer Officer (Class 1 Motorship) under the Merchant Shipping Act (Chapter 172) to serve in a Merchant Motorship.

Rama is a member of the Ocean Hull Committee of the International Union of Marine Insurance (IUMI) since 2017.

William WONG, Deputy Head of Marine, Singapore

William Wong has more than 25 years of experience in the marine insurance industry. He joined QBE in August 2014.

William has extensive experience in marine underwriting, marine claims and marine reinsurance functions in both direct as well as reinsurance companies in Singapore.

Prior to joining QBE, William spent more than 12 years with Swiss Reinsurance and Asia Capital Reinsurance, covering markets in the whole of Asia handling marine cargo, marine hull, marine shipbuilding, and marine liability treaty and facultative businesses.

He also spent 13 years in AIU, Guardian Royal Exchange plc and Asia Insurance heading the marine underwriting, marine business development and marine claims department.

William holds a Business Administration degree from the National University of Singapore and is a Chartered Insurer of the Chartered Insurance Institute (UK).
